Honeysuckle is a characteristic variety of lettuce with a large open, thistle head and leaves curly and tender, of light green or reddish color. We can plant it on our balcony or on the terrace, in pots and flowerpots, as well as in improvised constructions made of recycled materials. We use wooden boxes and crates, cut barrels, old water heaters or whatever else is available to be withdrawn.
What conditions does the lolly want on the balcony?
Honeysuckle is a cold season that grows best in low-temperature conditions. The ideal growth temperature is 14-19 ° C, while high temperatures cause premature growth of flowering shoots. When planted;in autumn, winter, and spring, we look for a sunny position on the balcony while in the summer months shadier. We also choose;a relatively sheltered location from the strong winds of the winter. It should be noted that the lobster is less tolerant at the very low temperatures than the classic lettuce, of the Roman variety.
What background does the lolly want on the balcony?
Regarding the substrate for lilac lettuce, it must be of medium consistency, fertile, rich in organic matter, moisture and good drainage. We can supply special vegetable garden plants from agronomic shops or garden centers, but we can also make our own recipe. Peat 60%, 20% dissolved manure, 10% compost and 10% perlite. Always, on the base of the flower pot or pot, put a layer of 2-3 cm gravel to ensure good drainage and place a geotextile separating the gravels with the planting substrate.
How do we plant the litter on the balcony?
If we want to plant lilac seeds, we can do it all year round, except in the summer months. Place the seeds at a depth of planting between 0.5-1.0 cm, cover them with soil and spray to provide moisture lightly each day. The optimum temperature for the germination of the lettuce seeds ranges between 15 – 21 ° C. The seeds germinate in 7-10 days and after 20-30 days, when our young plants have developed 3 to 4 real leaves, they are ready for transplantation. We plant in low gardens and lots of depth, 20-30cm, at distances 20-30cm between plants.
What watering and lubrication do lolls want on the balcony?
Lettuce needs frequent watering as we must keep their substrate relatively moist. Excessive humidity may have opposite effects and cause disease development problems. The most critical period is during the initial growth of plants and we need to ensure uniform moisture at a depth of 10-15 cm. The frequency of watering is higher during periods of high temperatures to cool the leaves of the lion and not to quickly develop the flowering stem. With regard to fertilization, we incorporate well-drained manure or nitrogen fertilizer every 20-30 days, peripherally, 5 inches away from the lion’s plants. One tablespoon of manure or one tablespoon of organic fertilizer is sufficient quality.
When do we harvest the lochs?
The lobsters are harvested 2-3 months from sowing, depending on the conditions prevailing by cutting the whole plant from the root with a knife. Alternatively, during the winter months, we can gradually cut the larch’s peripheral leaves that have already grown and leave them centrally to get a larger size and cut them in a subsequent harvest. We can not do this during the summer months, where we harvest the lochies directly, because we will have the flowering of the flowering shoots and the loss will not give us tender new leaves.
